Lisburn builders’ merchant is best in Northern Ireland

J P Corry, Lisburn is the overall winner in the second Octabuild Northern Ireland Builders Merchant Awards. The award was presented on Thursday last  (8 March) in the Stormont Hotel before an audience of almost 200 people representing the merchant and building industry. 

The judges were lavish in their praise not just for JP Corry in Lisburn but also for the high standard among the 36 builders merchants visited. According to the judging panel there were just 4 percentage points separating the top six merchants.

Nine other awards were presented on the night to a mixture of independent and group stores.

  • B. McNamee, Strabane won the Best Family Business Award.
  • Peter Woods Building Supplies won the Best Customer Service Award.
  • Newry Building Supplies took the Best Merchandising award.
  • N.G. Bell & Son was awarded for its Innovation.
  • Omagh-based P McDermott & Sons took the Marketing Award.
  • Antrim Building Supplies won the Award for the Best Trade Counter
  • Newry’s Haldane Fisher branch was honoured with the Best for Heavy Goods award.

and two other JP Corry branches, Carrigfergus and Newry won the Best Housekeeping and Best Management Systems Awards respectively.

The building material manufacturers who organised the awards as Octabuild are: Gyproc, Evo-Stik, Dulux Paints, Kingspan Insulation, Sanbra Fyffe, Tegral and Wavin.  

All builders merchants were judged on the basis of Customer Service, Merchandising, Management Systems, Housekeeping and Health & Safety.

The following are descriptions and judges comments on all winners.

JP Corry (3 awards)

In business for nearly 200 years, J P Corry has eighteen branches across Ireland and prides itself as being ‘The Complete Building Supplier.’

JP Corry, Lisburn (Overall Award)

“A brilliant store, everything well displayed and an excellent attitude towards business.” said the judges. The branch stocks a full range of building supplies and timber products. It has architectural and landscape display areas and holds Chain of Custody certification. It employs 16 staff.

JP Corry, Carrigfergus (Housekeeping)

Stockists of building supplies, timber products and essential plumbing.  It has  eleven full and part-time staff with the experience to assist all customers from the large builder to the individual DIY customer. “ A very good store, extremely well managed. Good tidy layout, Yard well presented and stock all priced and good presentation,” said the judges.

JP Corry, Newry (Management)

The branch stocks a full range of building supplies and timber products. It has recently completed a yard and shop makeover and implementated a specialist joinery department. The judges described it as “ An excellent branch on a small site that has been transformed in the past six months.”

B. McNamee & Co. Strabane (Family Business)

“Excellent family business and very well managed,” said the judges. With a full-time staff of 24 and a second branch in Newtownstewart B. McNamee & Co has been operating for over 50 years. It provides a comprehensive product range of building materials, timber, hardware and plumbing.

Haldane Fisher Newry (Heavy Goods)

The judges said that this site was selected for its large volume of heavy goods, which were very well managed on a 14 acre site. Haldane Fisher (Newry) has been been providing a service to the construction industry for the past 65 years.

Peter Woods Building Supplies (Customer Service)

With 22 full-time staff and 74 years in business Peter Woods Building Supplies was described by the judges as being, “Extremely well run. Well focused and teamwork is excellent. Excellent Customer service observed.”

Newry Building Supplies (Merchandising)

Newry Building Supplies has been in business for 28 years and has 26 staff. “It is an excellent shop with great merchandising, good yard and good security,” said the judges.

N.G. Bell & Son (Innovation)

Now in business for 62 years N.G. Bell, Ballywalter, employs 12 staff and has established itself as a premier self-build and renovation partner to trade and homeowners alike. “An impressive site undergoing change with retail ranges being introduced. A brilliant business plan and a passion to succeed. The management is go-ahead, innovative and enterprising,” said the judges.

P McDermott & Sons, Omagh (Marketing)

Forty years in business and a staff of 27 P. McDermot & Sons also has a store in Dromore. The judges were very impressed with the company web site. “It is a store with lots of atmosphere and a great place for builders and DIYers”, said the judges.

Antrim Building Supplies (Trade Counter)

The judges described the Trade Counter at Antrim Building Supplies as “the best they had seen”.  The business employs 26 people with a hire company also on the large site. The judges also commented on the well stocked and laid out shop, the excellent bathroom showrooms and the first class security.
